Call me crazy but I recently just purchased the Roku 2 XD. At first, I was pretty skeptical because I already have the first generation of the Apple TV and I didn’t think I would really need the Roku. But, Best Buy has a 30 day return policy so I thought I’d try it out. My debate was between the Roku and the second generation of the Apple T.V.

We don’t have cable at my house, just over the air tv. We subscribe to Netflix, an online streaming service to watch T.V. shows.

The first thing we noticed with the Roku 2 XD is the quality. Granted I got the 1080p option but it is very noticeable. The quality of picture compared to my Wii which we were previously streaming Netflix on is better. I had thought we were getting poor quality based off of my ISP (Internet Service Provider) but I was wrong.

The second thing we noticed was that the Roku 2 XD has a better selection. Check out the Roku streaming selection by clicking here.

Beyond Netflix streaming and iTunes streaming the Apple T.V. has MLB and NBA channels but we aren’t into sports enough to subscribe to any of them.

The Roku does have a few down sides. It doesn’t have is the ability to stream iTunes purchased videos to the device nor does it have the ability to airplay from your Apple mobile devices to your T.V. like the Apple T.V. can do.

I think we will keep the Roku for ease of use, good quality, and good selection. There are a lot of free services like Crackle that offers content with ad’s if you don’t have a subscription to Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime.
